Xmas Card with Kids 2

My son loves making cards with me. He gets to use all my fancy art supplies, especially the die cutting part. He enjoyed the shaved ice last week and wanted to do it again! This card he made for his best friends. This time he watercolored the background. According to him, the grey background is smoky sky. The funny part is, the sledding bunny looks like riding a flying carpet.

Coffee and Mittens

Two very simple cards with coffee and mittens, which in my opinion are very sweet elements for chilly winter! The one with coffee has a dry embossed (embossing folder) background and the one with mittens has white embossing paste + stencil background.

Xmas Card with Kids

Portland is snowing heavily. While the kids are staying home due to school closure, we made Xmas cards together for their cousins in east coast. They were so excited after finishing the cards. They mailed out the cards right away. One boy forgot the road was still icy. He ran too fast and slipped, and bumped his head.

Anyway, I started out by letting the kids choose window shapes: circle, oval, rectangle, or wonky window. They wanted circles at first, but as soon as they saw the wonky windows, they both wanted the wonky shape.  Next I showed them a couple of Xmas character stamps for them to choose from. They chose this cute moose from MFT (the little one was just following his brother).

I let them turned the handle of my die cutting machine to cut out the windows. I stamped the images for them and they colored everything themselves (well, the little one needed some helps with coloring the moose but he picked all the colors). The most exciting part for them is sprinkling shaved ice in the window. After I put all the window pieces together, they taped the moose in front of the window.

It was an easy card project, even for five and three year old boys :)

I Have The Whole World

A very special friend of mine is getting married this weekend. I made this card for him with a gift card inside. The idea is having a snowman who feels lots of warmth and happiness. Loves fall from the sky and he caught many.

I used distress ink blending with gathered twigs, fired brick, abandoned coral, and spun sugar for the background. I watercolored the snowman and hearts. Finally I used Tsukineko sparkle spritz to add shimmer to the card and frosted lace stickles/shaved ice for the snow underneath the snowman. I never add so much sparkle to my cards, but this one I really wanted it to shine for the wedding.

 

This is my very first version of the card. It has a lots of noises in the background and does give the feel of "miracle". So I ended up trashing it (well, my 3-year-old toddler spotted it and wanted it = trashing it).

Build A Snowman

Another card with Stacey Yacula's stamp set. The best thing about her stamps is that you can build a complete scene with lots of background elements like hills, trees, houses, clouds, snow forts... Everything you can think of. All you need to do is coloring. So there's nothing fancy I did in this card. Just enjoyed watercoloring.

Owl-ways Think Of You

Switching gears to a non-Xmas card this time. This is a CAS style card as I always enjoy.

I started off by masking the moon with a circle shaped cardstock. I used ink blending technique to apply distress ink abandoned coral at the bottom and chipped sapphire at the top. Then finally I applied seedless preserves on the entire card. Peeling off the masking cardstock, I was very happy with the way it turned out. My favorite night sky color is always dark blue, but this time I just wanted to challenge myself by trying different. Next time I think I would again try something else that's non-traditional night sky.

Xmas Melody

This is my first Xmas card using Stacey Yacula's design. I'm so excited because every single one of Stacey's designs is just so cute and adorable.

I first started out by creating the background with watercoloring mix of grey and black. After it was dry, I randomly added white circles by applying white pigment ink through my son's circle stencils. This piece of background paper is used in the back of critters as well as the sentiment. I colored the Xmas critters with distress markers then fussy cut them.

Finally when coming to assembling the card, I cut out a window from my woodgrain cardstock and stick the background card behind. I adhered the critters with foam tapes so that they pop out from the window, which is not very obvious from the picture.

Fireworks

Ever since we went to Disney World, my boys kept talking about fireworks. I read a book, Daniel's First Fireworks, to them and they wanted me to read it again and again. This gave me the incentive to create a fireworks card.

I tried a couple different methods like using metalic markers and gold/red embossing to draw the fireworks. Evetually I came to this solution and I'm pretty happy with the way it looks. I first drew the outlines with white gel pen. Then I used a glue pen to draw a circle around each firework then filled up the empty space, finally embossed everything with Hero Arts sparkle embossing powder.

White Xmas Shaker Card

Lately I fell in love with this elegant blue-ish grey color from Mama Elephant Winter pigment ink. It is perfect for Xmas and I think it matches well with a fairy or angle. I ink blend this color in the background as well as the border.

Fall Watercolor Scene

Today I'm doing simple freehand watercolor to create a fall scene. I mixed colors from my distress ink (fossilized amber, ripe persimmon, and fired brick) with paints from my Winsor & Newton watercolor set to create these fall colors. After watercoloring, I drew some random diagrams such as suns and trees with a white gel pen just to add interests to the scene.

Bunny Bookmarks

I made these bookmarks for my two little boys. At their age, they are obsessed with rainbow colors and cards in a set. It made them feel like collectibles.

I used ink blending to create the backgrounds. You can see the colors I used in the supply list. Then I watercolored the bunnies with distress markers.

My Nine Lives

This is my third card for MFT Super Star card contest (http://www.mftstamps.com/blog/you-could-be-a-card-design-superstar-contest-2016/).

I have to be honest that I'm not good at drawing cartoon figures. I googled quite a bit to see how people draw cosplay figures for cats. It turned out that there are tones of ideas online. I absoutely would not claim these are my original ideas. But I had a lot of fun putting them all together.

I struggled quite a bit deciding whether I should color these cats or not. The notion behind black and white is that these "nine lives" are not real, therefore they should not get colors. Just like a very old photo, when you look at it, it immediately becomes obvious that people in the photo do not live in present state (well, may be they are, but you get the idea...). Ideally I would like to put a colored figure to contrast the black and white, but in the end I feel it would make the card too busy so decided not to do that.

I had a hard time taking photos for this card. The vibrance of the background color just doesn't show right in photos. It either looked too dark or too bright. I've done my best but I would have to say the actual card looks much better than this.

Hello from outer space

This is my second enty to MFT Super Star card contest (http://www.mftstamps.com/blog/you-could-be-a-card-design-superstar-contest-2016/).

The theme is to say hello to a friend who lives very far and infrequently in touched with. This is symbolized by an outer space because it is a world that is far and with lots of unknowns but yet very colorful. This galaxy is painted with watercolor, inspired by Kristina Werner's father day card (http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/?p=15994). I watched this video many months ago and when I decided to create a galaxy background in this card, Kristina's video is the first thing came into my mind. I'm very happy that it worked out really well with the theme I have.

This card is entered for MFT Super Star card contest (http://www.mftstamps.com/blog/you-could-be-a-card-design-superstar-contest-2016/). This is my first time joining an online cardmaking event. It was really fun!

In this card, I hacked MFT window dies so that it can open inside the card. In most of the cards, window are opened at the front cover and the cat peaking out. I feel that it would be fun to have the cat peaking into the window instead and people get curious about what the cat is looking at. I hope I achieved this effect with this card.

I normally like a little humor built into my cards and I feel this stamp set is perfect for it. In this card, obviously the main character is the pink cat who peeks into the house. She is the one who says "Thank you for being there when I kneaded you". It is to the other two cats who supported her from below, so that she can find her food!
